things to do
Here’s our pick of favourite things to do on Straddie:
- Hang out at Cylinders – great swimming, chilling and the surf can be legendary. On a great day, the right-hand break will take you all the way to the Hotel. Make sure you have cash for a cleansing ale!
- Spot dolphins, manta rays, turtles and during season, the majestic humpback whale along any of Straddie’s picturesque headlands and beaches.
- Early morning walk from Deadmans to Frenchmans Beach. Follow the stairs up to East Coast Rd for a rewarding breakfast & coffee.
- Surf the world class breaks at Main Beach – home of champion surfer Bede Durbidge.
- Walk the scenic North Gorge Trail – look out for birds, marine life and maybe even a koala or kangaroo.
- Take a trip to Brown Lake – pack a picnic, have a refreshing freshwater swim and make a day of it visiting the historic town of Dunwich along the way.
- Fishing at sunset at Amity Point.
- Sampling the great range of fresh, local produce. We recommend:
- Mal Starkey for seafood – spanner crabs are his specialty
- Stradbroke Island Butchery – great meats, excellent locally smoked small goods & deli
- Point Lookout Markets - local honey, hams, chutneys and baked goods
- Straddie offers many adventure tours – sandboarding, fishing, diving to name a few. Check out the brochures when you arrive at Straddie or visit a local website.
- Play a game of outdoor pool as the sun goes down at The Straddie Hotel.
- Afternoon barefoot lawn bowls at the Point Lookout Bowls Club. Not complete without jugs of XXXX Gold Beer - loser shouts!
- Unwind with a relaxing massage or spa treatment at the new Stradbroke Island Hotel.
- Hire a mountain bike from Fishes Cafe for a self-guided tour of the island. They also have wi-fi if you really can’t keep away from email/internet.
- Indulge in the best gelato from Oceanic Gelati while gazing out to Moreton Island. You may even spot a dolphin or kangaroo.
